Frequently Asked Questions
Support Foster Children in Loudoun County
Our Knights of Columbus Council is dedicated to serving our communities, which also includes supporting foster children in Loudoun County. Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882 to care for widows and orphans of the parish. With a strong network of volunteers and resources, we are well-equipped to provide mentorship, and assistance for these vulnerable children. Our various initiatives align perfectly with the needs of foster youth, ensuring they receive the care and support necessary to thrive. Here's some useful info about foster care and how to help:
What is Foster Care?
Foster care is a protective service provided to children in the custody of the Department of Family Services. It provides substitute, temporary care for when a child must be separated from his/her own parents or relatives because of neglect, abuse, abandonment, or other issues endangering their health and/or safety.
Children in Foster Care
The children in foster care range in age from birth to 21 years old; most are 11 years old and older. These children come from diverse backgrounds and may have experienced abuse, neglect or lived in families in need of supportive services. The needs of a child in foster care can vary but all children in foster care have a need for safety, permanency and well-being.
Some stats - why we're getting involved
-
In Loudoun County, according to the same report, there was a 235% increase in foster homelessness from 2020 to 2024.

How can the Knights help?
- Become a Foster Parent: Foster parenting is caring for a child placed in your home through the local department of social services. The child placed in your care is unable to remain safely in their home with their parents or relatives. Foster parents are asked to provide a safe, stable, temporary and caring atmosphere for a child placed in their home. The need for foster families is great in Loudoun County - to get involved, or to learn more, click on the Faster Families Highway for more information from the County and how to become a foster family.
- Help Foster Children: Our Council serves as a conduit to broader Parish support for foster children. Imagine not having a birthday party or not getting a birthday gift. For some children, this is an ongoing effort, We've set up an Amazon site to collect items for foster children in need of basic supplies as well as birthday gift(s). Make an impact today!
